- 2,000 participants engage in heated taekwondo competitions in Guwahati, India for 3 days

The Kim Un-yong Sports Committee (KUYSC) held the 2019 India Kimunyong Open Taekwondo Championships at the Guwahati Nehru Stadium for three days from March 29 to March 31.

 

The event was hosted by the KUYSC and co-organized by the KUYSC’s India Branch and the Sports Federation of India, as well as sponsored by the Assam state government, the Olympic Committee of Assam and the Taekwondo Association of India.

 

The opening ceremony on 29 March was attended by India’s minister of municipal administration Hamletson Dohling, Indian member of parliament (MP) Numal Momin, 2019 India Kimunyong Cup organizing committee chairman Lee Jung-hee, KUYSC secretary-general Seo Hyun-seok, and officials of the Taekwondo Federation of India

Indian MP Numal Momin said in his greetings, “We are honoured to hold India’s first Kimunyong Cup Open Taekwondo Competition here in Guwahati. To further develop taekwondo in India, we will make our best efforts at a national level.”

 

KUYSC secretary general Seo Hyun-seok remarked, "I am delighted to hold the first India Kimunyong Open Taekwondo Competition to celebrate the achievements of Dr. Kim Un-yong, the former IOC vice president who founded Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo Federation and developed and globalized Taekwondo to be adopted as an Olympic sport. My sincere gratitude to the organizers who held the competition despite difficulties. At the next India Kimunyong Cup, the KUYSC will send a taekwondo demonstration team from Korea to publicize the excellence of Taekwondo. "

 

The organizing committee chairman Lee Jung-hee said in his greetings, "Through this competition, we will try to spread taekwondo so that India can become a world-competitive country in the future. With the experience of hosting the Kimunyong Cup, India’s taekwondo will be able to develop more internationally.

 

The KUYSC said that it will work together for the development and globalization of taekwondo for India, which has a great passion for taekwondo, and plans to hold open competitions and seminars for each region in India which will also help revitalize the local economy.
